BANGKOK: Efforts to resolve unrest in south Thailand is a real co-operation between Malaysia and Thailand which goes beyond drawing up treaties.
Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said the efforts to facilitate peace talks between the Thai government and Mara Patani – an umbrella body representing militant groups in southern Thailand – is an opportunity to display the friendship between Malaysia and its northern neighbors.
He said both countries have a history of strong cooperation.
"When Malaysia was facing the problem of terrorism before, Thailand helped in many ways to put an end to that kind of activity," he said, adding that the country remains thankful to the Thai government and their people.
"We pledge to help in any way possible to end this violence in the south.
"I am quite sure with both countries working on the problem, the problem will be reduced," he said in a joint-press conference with this Thai counterpart General Prayut Chan-o-cha at Government House here on Wednesday (Oct 24).
Former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor was recently appointed as the new facilitator for the southern Thailand peace talks.
Malaysia has hosted several rounds of peace talks between the Thai government and Mara Patani representatives.
