Manchester United icon Robin van Persie has revealed he plans to retire from professional football at the end of the current season.
The Old Trafford favourite played a pivotal role in United’s last Premier League title win, with his goals crucial in ensuring Sir Alex Ferguson ended his spell as manager on a high by securing the club’s 20th league title.
Van Persie left Arsenal in order to pursue silverware at Old Trafford and was quickly accepted by supporters after an electric start to his career which saw him secure the Golden Boot award in his first full season at the club.
Speaking to Dutch publication AD the former Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year winner was asked when he planned to call it a day.
“When I have to stop? That is probably at the end of this season,” he admitted.
“That was also the approach.
“I will be 36 years old, and will have been a professional for 18 years. From the age of five, I’ve only been involved in football.”
Van Persie returned to boyhood club Feyenoord after a spell with Fenerbache in Turkey, and although he hopes to win the league title in his final season, he is adamant the campaign is already successful
Van Persie continued: “I also do not believe that my return to Feyenoord has only been successful if we win the title.
“How is it successful? This is actually it, if you look at the whole picture. I had lost the fun. That’s not how I wanted to end, without pleasure. The fun has returned at Feyenoord.”
