Hoddle, who was celebrating his 61st birthday, is "responding well" to specialist treatment after the incident on Saturday morning.

The former England manager was taken seriously ill at the BT Sports studios – BT's afternoon live scores were canceled as a result.

Last night, Redknapp told The Mail on Sunday he was with Hoddle when he was playing a game of keepy uppies.

He added: "I do not know what caused it.

"One guy from BT Sport was fantastic – he was first aid-trained and he was excellent.

"It was a desperate situation – you just think, 'Please God, he will be OK'. You will not meet a guy like Glenn.

"It was a great day, it was his birthday, we were all having fun and laughing. It was really upsetting to see.

"Obviously we hope to make a speedy and full recovery. That's the most important thing. "

A spokesman for Hoddle confirmed the football legend was taken ill.

He said: "Earlier today Glenn collapsed at the BT Sport Studios.He received immediate medical attention on the London hospital.

"The condition is serious but Glenn is currently receiving specialist treatment and responding well.

"Glenn's family are with him and would like to thank everyone for their support."

BT Sport present Jake Humphrey revealed the news about the train Tottenham and England player, who now works as a TV pundit.

Former England team-mate Gary Lineker wished Hoddle well, writing on Twitter: "Hugely worrying news that Glenn Hoddle collapsed at the BT studios earlier.

The Football Association, via the England team account, wrote: "Worrying news, get well soon, Glenn Hoddle, we're all behind you."

Tottenham and Chelsea also felt their best wishes for their player and manager, as did Harry Kane who said his thoughts were with Hoddle.

Hoddle won 53 caps for England while he managed to win the 1998 World Cup finals in France, qualifying on the back of a memorable 0-0 draw away to Italy.

He lost the job the following year after expressing controversial views on reincarnation in a Sunday Times interview.

A two-time FA Cup winner with Spurs, Hoddle also had success on the continent, lifting the UEFA Cup with Tottenham in 1984 and the League 1 title in Monaco in 1988.
