SINGAPORE: Anwar Ibrahim once again affirmed that he had good relations with his former enemy, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

The relationship between PKR's elected president and Mahathir has been a hot topic every time he attends an international event and it was no different at the recent Singapore Summit 2018.

"I was close to him. I mean very close. And then came one of the most vile battles in Malaysia, "said the former deputy prime minister, quoted by Bernama.

He was answering a question from Haslinda Amin, Senior International Correspondent for Bloomberg Television, about his relationship with Mahathir.

Anwar was referring to the time when he was fired from the government and later condemned for sodomy.

"But we managed to solve (our differences). We say, "Look, we must work together to save the country." That was the motive and I continued to mobilize him, "he said.

He was in Singapore to speak at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on "Malaysia's quest for democratic accountability."

The waiting prime minister also announced that he and Mahathir would have weekly talks.

Anwar, who was recently elected MP for Port Dickson, said that he had been very clear about the fact that Mahathir should have the opportunity to do what he wants.

"I'm just going to support. This understanding seems to be going well, "said Bernama.

Mahathir is in his second term as prime minister after Pakatan Harapan's victory in the May 9 polls.

"Frankly, to his credit as well, we came back to the ancient times by talking to each other and reliving good memories of the past. We are trying to erase the nasty part, "added Anwar.
