PETALING JAYA: An MP from Perlis who is accused of molesting a teenager has described the incident as a misunderstanding.
Speaking to Harian Metro, the politician said he had no intention of touching the 15-year old.
A police report was filed by the teenager’s family accusing the politician of molesting the teenager.
“I have known the family for a long time, for almost two years, and this alleged incident occurred in a public area.
“I do not want to prolong the matter as I pity the student who has a bright future ahead,” the MP told the Malay daily.
He also denied paying off the family to have the police report retracted, saying he was not aware that they had done so until the family informed him.
Yesterday, it was reported that a police report was lodged in Perlis recently against a politician who was said to be a former minister.
But the report, lodged by the teenager at the Kangar police station on Oct 20, has since been retracted.
The matter came to light after activist R Sri Sanjeevan, who runs anti-crime outfit Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force, questioned the police for not arresting the politician.
Police have said they would investigate the complaint despite the retraction.
Perlis police chief Noor Mushar Mohd said the case would be investigated under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
