Jio Phone 2, Jio Phone's successor last year, who runs KaiOS, was announced earlier this month at the 2018 AGM of Reliance Industries Limited. Last June, Google had invested about 22 million dollars (about 151 million rupees) in KaiOS in an attempt to bring its suite of applications for phones. While Google Assistant, as well as WhatsApp and YouTube have already been announced for the operating system, it has been noticed that Google Maps is now available on KaiOS, on the Jio Phone. Adding to that, Google Maps should also be available on the Jio Phone 2 once it's on the shelves next month.
As part of a new software update, Google Maps is now available on Jio Phone. The availability of the Jio Phone software update (2018.628.2) can be verified by going to Settings> Device> Software Update and installing it. It takes a minimum of 30% battery to be installed on your phone. After updating to the latest software, users will need to open the Jio Store application and download the Google Maps application visible on the home page. We were able to access the Google Maps app on a Jio phone.
Designed for a small 2.4-inch QVGA panel, Google Maps on Jio Phone has a minimal configuration. The Google-owned mobile navigation app on KaiOS has a smaller file size compared to its traditional Android or iOS counterparts and, therefore, comes with a set of dimmed options such as Search, Display Map, Your Location, Drive, Two-wheeler, Train or Bus, Walking, Map Layers and About. The navigation on the application is relatively simple because you only have to select from the list of drop-down suggestions when you enter the location in the search bar. Users can also access the world map, but this is not recommended on a screen with a small diagonal. There are even layers of maps including Traffic that help you get an idea of the current traffic situations in different regions.
In February of this year, the Facebook app was rolled out for KaiOS, while YouTube and WhatsApp were announced at the Jio Phone 2 launch event that will arrive on the Jio Phone starting July 21. While the Nokia 8110 4G is not available in India, the KaiOS feature phone will also be updated, revealed HMD Global.
As a reminder, the Jio Phone 2 sports a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, works on KaiOS and has 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of integrated storage. It also comes with a 2 megapixel rear sensor and a VGA front camera. The battery is capped at 2000mAh, and the phone gets 4G VoLTE, NFC, GPS, Bluetooth and FM radio in terms of connectivity.
