MUAR: Melaka may have to pay more when he wants Johor to increase the state's raw water supply.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian said that the two state governments signed the water agreement yesterday. He said it would not be a problem because the two states were ruled by Pakatan Harapan. "If Melaka needs more water from us, she has to pay more but we see no problem in satisfying Melaka's demand."

"However, we will have to see Johor's ability to provide them with raw water, because we have to change some of the clauses in the water agreement. in case Johor would face drought. "

The Johor government would review Melaka's request to increase the daily supply of raw water from 35 to 55 million gallons.

Earlier, Chief Minister Osman and Melaka's Adly Zahari signed the agreement that saw the price unchanged at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons.

Just like Johor, Melaka is experiencing rapid development with economic growth that has attracted investors

"Housing construction projects are multiplying to meet the demand of a growing number of residents in Melaka. It also requires adequate supplies of essential needs, including water, "said Adly.

"The water sources in Melaka are quite limited. We are grateful to have a neighbor like Johor who is ready to help us."

At the beginning of the agreement in 1991 Melaka paid 20 sen per 1000 gallons of water to Johor. It was raised to 30 sen in 1998, 40 sen in 2008 and 50 sen in 2013.

In the agreement, Johor agreed to provide raw water to Melaka until 2090 , with a tariff revision every five or ten years.
