PUTRAJAYA: The anti-corruption body will not withdraw the corruption charges against the Minister of Finance Lim Guan Eng.
Refusing such a decision, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) says that it has no power to withdraw cases
"The power to do so falls to the Chambers of the Attorney General ", said the MACC in a statement.
The agency was responding to a report by China Press that quoted sources as saying that MACC is likely to withdraw from Lim when its corruption trial resumes next week
Lim, then chief minister of Penang, had pleaded not guilty on June 30, 2016 to two counts of corruption involving the conversion of agricultural land into residential status and purchase of a bungalow at a value lower than that of the market.
He was accused of using his position as chief minister to obtain satisfaction for himself and his wife Betty Chew Gek Cheng in approving the application for conversion of farmland. It is located in a public housing area in Balik Pulau at Magnificent Emblem Sdn Bhd.
He faces a second charge of using his position to get a pitch and a bungalow at No. 25, Jalan Pinhorn, July 28, 2015 The businesswoman Phang Li Koon for RM2. 8mil, at the lower market value.
Lim was sworn in as finance minister on May 21, after Pakatan Harapan's victory in May 9 polls.
His trial resumes on Monday.
