Man City defender Aymeric Laporte breaks Premier League record in Tottenham win

Manchester City’s 1-0 win at Tottenham will not be remembered for its quality of football, but may prove crucial in the Premier League title race.

But as well as the significance the victory could have for the team, it also marked a record-breaking achievement for one of City’s players of the season so far.

Aymeric Laporte had a shaky start to life at the Etihad – particularly in the Champions League defeat at Liverpool – but has established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet this campaign alongside John Stones in defence.

The Frenchman, who joined City for a then club-record £57m fee, has been a rock at the back and has even scored two goals as City sit top of the Premier League and their Champions League group.

Now, his form has broken a Premier League record as the Spurs win was Laporte’s 19th league start for City and he has not been on the losing side once.

No player has ever had a longer unbeaten run in consecutive starts in the competition.

Last season, Laporte started nine games in the league, winning each time. This season, he has lined up for kick-off at the start of every league fixture – winning eight and drawing twice.

To make his record even more impressive, City have only conceded three times in the league – against Huddersfield, Wolves and Newcastle. All three goals came from defenders – meaning the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Harry Kane have all failed to score against the champions.
