PETALING JAYA: Dr Maszlee Malik says he will step down as International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) president after the process to appoint his successor ends.
The Education Minister was responding to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who urged the former to resign as soon as possible.
“I respect the Prime Minister and the Cabinet’s decision. At the same time, I respect Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement.
“I have actually decided to step down as IIUM president once the convocation ceremony ends, and when the process to appoint my successor is completed,” Dr Maszlee tweeted on Monday (Nov 12).
He added that the replacement process is expected to be completed by the end of November.
Earlier, Muhyiddin said the party and the Cabinet had already made it clear that the Simpang Renggam MP should leave the post.
“A very clear decision has been made by the Cabinet. He (Dr Maszlee) has responded by accepting it but has said he needs more time.
“I would rather advise that he resigns as soon as possible,” he said.
Dr Maszlee’s appointment as IIUM president was roundly condemned especially by student groups, as it went against Pakatan Harapan’s promise not to appoint politicians to manage universities.
The minister’s office said he has agreed to step down but is delaying the move until a replacement is found.
Dr Maszlee took over the Education Ministry on May 21 and became the seventh president of IIUM on Sept 5.
