PETALING JAYA – Miss Universe, Malaysia Jane Teoh will be hoping to compete in Bangkok next month with her specially designed national costume, Bangau Perahu.

The three-piece RM 7,000 outfit is based on an artistic interpretation of traditional Malaysian craftsmanship by designer Hallh Hamid.

Roomh, 30, said he had spent six months creating the suit from the crane of the boat or the sail guard, commonly used on the traditional fishing boats of the east coast.

"I was inspired by the rich cultural history and Malay beliefs, the authenticity of the artistic know-how in boat building in the ancient times and the Malay art of # 39; awan larat (clouds) that we usually see in the sculptures, "he added.

He added that the suit had been designed in three colors with an ethylene-vinyl acetate foam and that he wished people liked it.

"I was nervous because of past criticism of costumes in previous competitions," he admitted.

However, he persevered and decided to choose the bangau, the fishermen believing that he could protect it while they were working at sea.

(Last year, Miss Universe Malaysia wore a national costume inspired by the nasi lemak, while Miss Universe Malaysia 2016 wore a jumpsuit featuring the Petronas Twin Towers.)

Teoh, who paraded the costume at a preview at Myeg Tower yesterday, said that she felt "very good" by wearing it with a pair of six-inch boots designed by the shoemaker Local Rhea Tan Yen Yen.

"I am excited and proud to be able to wear these beautiful creations to represent my country," said Teoh, 21.

For the evening dresses category, the financial and accounting student model will wear a silver dress from creators Amar Madfie and Zeed Jameel, whose brand is known as the Amaze.

The full-bodied shoulders, with their soft draped silhouette and mermaid cut, showcase rows of hand-stitched embellishments and intricate embroidery.

"The national costume is rich in Malay culture and the evening outfit is simply exquisite, thanks to our talented stylists," said Teoh, who spent a year preparing for the parade after being crowned in January.

Miss Universe Malaysia's National Director, former beauty queen Datin Elaine Daly, expressed hope that Malaysia would win.

For the national segment of the auction of gifts, where the candidates bring souvenirs from their respective countries for a charity auction, Teoh will present a necklace with three layers of freshwater pearls from the collection Borneo Pearls classic.
