Sepang: Thai Moto3 rider Nakarin Atiratphuvapat took the lead in the first free practice session of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The Honda Team Asia rider was the fastest with a time of 2: 25,290 minutes on a wet circuit of Sepang International to finish at 0.152 hours ahead of Aron Canet (Estrella Galicia) and 0.222 seconds ahead of the title contender Marco Bezzecchi (Redox PruestelGP).

Nakarin is currently Thailand's only competitor at the world motorcycle championships.

In MotoGP, Suzuki's Alex Rins clocked the fastest time of yesterday's practice: riding a motorcycle in flames the day before.

Already considered to have only an outside chance of winning the Grand Prix of tomorrow, the result of the Spanish was all the more surprising as it came after that. a fuel leak ignited his bike Thursday in a pit lane.

The fire caused only minor damage to the vehicle's electronic components and was quickly repaired by the mechanics of the team.

"I'm on fire," Rins joked after signing the fastest lap in 1.59.608 in the afternoon session, a 0.089 lead over second-placed Andrea Dovizioso, who took the lead of the rank.

"I was surprised because it's not usual," he conceded when he was asked about the best time achieved on a fire-hit motorcycle, but he added: "Of course, I'm happy."

Marc Marquez of Honda, crowned world champion in Japan last month, set the third fastest time at 0.093 seconds and Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi fourth.

Italian Dovizioso continues his third consecutive victory on the international circuit of Sepang as he seeks to win the second prize this season, but faces a challenge from his compatriot Rossi.

But it's Rins, currently 10th in the world, who was fastest yesterday.

He had used a different bike during the morning session and had the sixth fastest time. This is only when he returned on his main motorcycle – the one struck by the fire – that he passed the time sheets in the afternoon. bangkok post / afp
