KUALA LUMPUR: There is no big deal in parliamentarians sitting out debates, claims Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin after Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak bemoaned the low turnout in Parliament when he was speaking.
Muhyiddin, who is the Home Minister, said it was up to the ministers and MPs to decide whether or not they wished to sit in a particular debate, arguing that all speeches would be recorded.
“Everything spoken in Parliament will be included in the Hansard, the attending officers will record them. I don’t think this is a big issue,” he told a press conference, here, today.
Najib had, on Tuesday, lamented the almost empty Dewan Rakyat when he was debating the government’s mid-term review of the 11th Malaysian Plan, claiming it would be better then for him to just air his grouses on Facebook as no ministers and deputies wanted to listen to him.
Commenting further on the matter, Muhyiddin said he was unsure why many among the government lawmakers chose not to sit in when Najib was speaking, adding that this was not unusual.
“I’ve been an MP for so long. Sometimes there are parliamentarians who speak to an almost empty house,” he said.
Meanwhile, Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran argued that MPs were still able to follow the debates as they were broadcasted live.
“You can be in your respective offices and still listen. It is accessible from everywhere. It doesn’t mean you have to be in the August house,” he said.
