PUCHONG: The deputy water, land and natural resources minister has urged the public to lodge a report with the anti-graft agency if they are unhappy over the recent landslide in Penang which has claimed nine lives.
Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji said that by doing so, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) would be able to initiate investigations into whether there was any breach in the standard operating procedure (SOP) that led to the tragedy.
“If people feel that there is something amiss and there is a lack of transparency, they can lodge a report with the MACC and with other authorities. This way we can find out if the SOP was adhered to.
“We are not sure if developers adhered to the regulations or not,” he said after launching a bird’s nest processing plant here this evening.
In the incident in Penang on Friday, a landslide at the Bukit Kukus Paired Highway construction site crushed workers’ cabins and quarters and buried them under a pile of earth. The body of the ninth victim was recovered this evening.
Yesterday Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) revealed that many of the SOPs were not followed and it had told the contractor that work could not go on.
The contractors, according to Penang DOSH director Mohd Rosdee Yaakob, continued with the work including at the site of the landslide.
Two days ago, the works ministry said it would conduct an investigation into the landslide and take action against the relevant parties if they were found to have been negligent.
The Mineral and Geoscience Department, meanwhile, identified water from a stream on the hilly area at Paya Terubong to be among the likely causes of the landslide.
