Proposal to abolish death penalty gets positive feedback — Liew

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 22): The Government’s move to abolish the mandatory death penalty has received positive international feedback, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong.

He however stressed that the proposal was still undergoing comprehensive study and the Cabinet will decide on any further action.

“After the Attorney General’s Chambers has completed its study, it will be brought to me to table it at Cabinet level for a decision,” he said after attending a recording of UPSOUND, a Bernama News Channel programme entitled “Abolishing The Death Penalty” which would be aired at 8.30pm on Wednesday.

Liew said after getting the approval of the Cabinet, the proposal to abolish the death penalty would be tabled at Dewan Rakyat to be debated and voted.

“If possible.. we could table it in Dewan Rakyat this year, if it is not on time, we will process it next year in the March 2019 session,” said the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

Liew said the move to abolish the death penalty received praises from various groups including the United Nations which viewed it as a positive measure.

On Oct 7, Liew announced a study to abolish the mandatory death penalty in the country, was in the final stage before it was tabled to the Cabinet.
