Find all live updates from the second match between Sri Lanka and South Africa in Colombo on Cricketnext.com Day 1 Summary: The South African Keshav Maharaj has claimed a career … The top eight for 116 to prevent Sri Lanka from making the most of a good start and limiting them to 277 for nine on the first day of the second and final test on Friday. The left-arm pitcher recorded the best number in Sri Lanka by a bowler invited to bring his team back into the competition, but South Africa will hardly celebrate because of his own vulnerability to the balloon. Akila Dananjaya was beating 16 out of five stumps with Rangana Herath, with the hosts hoping for a 2-0 shutout against a team they defeated in three days at Galle's first test. Following their decision to take first place after winning the draw, opener Dimuth Karunaratne and Danushka Gunathilaka forged a stand more than a century, defying the South African bowlers in the morning session without wicket. Karunaratne alone had dominated the entire South African squad at Galle, and the left-hander continued his rich form to get his third score of more than 50 points in as many innings. He and Gunathilaka made 116 runs for the first trio to lay the groundwork for a grand total, but Maharaj ensured that the second session belonged to the tourists. Aged 28, Karunaratne, who had made 53, tickled one on the side of the leg, Quinton Kock taking a nice catch behind the stumps. In his sequel, Maharaj fired Gunathilaka for 57 years when the drummer attempted a slog sweep and Kagiso Rabada charged from the deep square leg and dived forward to take a brilliant catch. Maharaj inflicted a third blow before tea when he led Kusal Mendis (21) to a sweeping shot with Rabada taking his second shot of the day. The spinner struck again in the first after tea to dismiss Angelo Mathews for 10 and then went through the middle and lower order of Sri Lanka. Dhananjaya de Silva was 60 years old while the three best drummers from Sri Lanka used some fifty years before Maharaj wreaked havoc in the lower ranks.

Comment (sleeves in Sri Lanka)

Hello! Welcome to the second day of the second and final test match between Sri Lanka and South Africa at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. Both teams will be partly happy and partly sad after the action of Day 1, as they both have a roughly equal footing in the match so far. The local team finished the first day of 277 on a field that started spitting venom in the very first hour of play. Considering that the visitors were able to score only 199 during the two combined heats at of the last Test, the Lankans hope to reach the psychological total of 300 and finish their challenge with the bat later. The goal of the African team is to reject the rest of the lone wicket of Sri Lanka and play as long as possible. The action starts in a moment, stay tuned!

… Day 2, Session 1 …

This is all from Day 1. Visitors will be looking to get the last box as soon as possible but they will have Bat well to enter the The land is running tremendously and Sri Lanka also has three quality spinners in its ranks. Join us for all the action from Day 2 to 1000 local (4:30 GMT). For now, you can change tab to catch the match Zimbabwe-Pakistan. Until then, applause!

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka started on a positive note. Their openers stole a 116-point stand and gave them the upper hand. However, they lost their way after lunch with a couple of wickets. Dhananjaya de Silva and Roshen Silva added 54 for the 5th gate to get them back on track. The first one then pioneered a way up to his third fifty test, however, there was no real contribution of the lower order. Akila Dananjaya is still in the middle with Rangana Herath and the hosts hope that he will get quick points on Day 2 to extend Proteas's concerns.

South Africa will be satisfied with the result of the day after the departure of the local team. They have a man to thank – Keshav Maharaj. The orthodox spinner of the left arm took 8/116, which is best for any visiting spectator in Sri Lanka and helped limit Sri Lanka to 277/9. Maybe now Faf du Plessis will regret the decision not to play the second player. Kagiso Rabada got the other wicket, but if there was Tabraiz Shamsi in the XI game, that would make another picture.

We are back for the second session. Sri Lanka are in prime position here, so the tourists will need an early wicket to begin things. Karunaratne and Gunathilaka to continue, while Keshav Maharaj will take the ball first up. A slip and a short leg in place. Let's go…

… Day 1, Session 2 …

The Sri Lankans will enjoy their lunch as both their openers remain unbeaten at the end of the first session. South Africa have found it hard to make much happen. Winning the toss, the hosts have used the conditions to their advantage and scored 93 runs. There were a few nervy moments, but otherwise Dimuth Karunaratne and Danushka Gunathilaka have done well. The surface isn't doing much to assist the bowlers, the seamers especially, so come the second session, Faf du Plessis will have to mix it up more and be innovative with his fields. The move to drop Tabraiz Shamsi for an extra pacer seems more strange now, given how even part-timer Aiden Markram has got the ball to spin appreciably. Let's see how it plays out further. Join us for the afternoon session soon.
