Real Madrid news: Antonio Conte to replace Julen Lopetegui, deal is ’98 per cent’ done | Football | Sport

Conte has been out of work since the summer when he was sacked by Chelsea, despite winning the Premier League in his first season at the club.

The Italian has been linked with the Manchester United job and roles in his homeland.

But Conte is the favourite to take over from Julen Lopetegui at Real Madrid.

Lopetegui has been under pressure in recent weeks after just one win in their last six matches.

Real face Barcelona in Sunday’s El Clasico and defeat could mean the end for Lopetegui.

Former Poland international Artur Wichniarek wrote on Twitter that his friend Robert Kralj, who is in Egypt with Conte, told him that a deal with Real is 98 per cent done.

And Wichniarek was retweeted by Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

The hire of Conte would see the Italian reunite with Thibaut Courtois, who was his number one goalkeeper at Chelsea.

But the Belgian would appear to be against Conte or Jose Mourinho taking over at Real.

Spanish newspaper El Pais quote Courtois as saying: “I can not believe it!

“Here I am the only one who has worked with Conte and with Mourinho.

“I left London to not have to go through something like that again and now it turns out that Conte comes, and if not, Mourinho.”

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked with Real but the Argentine coach played down those reports ahead of their clash with Manchester City on Monday night.

“I don’t have social media so I don’t receive much information,” he said.

“That’s why my head, my face, I look younger than I am. Stuff like that happens in football.

“You can’t change anything.”
