KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Shafie Apdal denounced Umno and NOT for elevating race and religion in opposition to Richard Malanjum's appointment to the head of the magistracy.

He reminded the opposition that even Brunei, with a population of over 90% Muslims, had just named -Muslim, Steven Chong Wang Oon, as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of country

Brunei was not only a predominantly Muslim country, but it provided for hudud criminal penalties.

Shafie said that opposition parties should not harpoon and religion. Malanjum, Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak High Court, was appointed because of his experience and abilities.

"We all know that there were a lot of problems in our justice system and that someone must clean the house. We are very confident that Malanjum is the man to do, not because he is Sabahan, but because we are confident of his abilities. "

Shafie also said that it was appropriate to link Malanjum's appointment to the requirements of fulfilling the terms of the Malaysian Agreement of 1963.

He thanked the Federal Government and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for approving the nomination, as it was the recognition of the citizens of East Malaysia.

Malanjum was sworn in as the ninth Chief Justice on July 11, becoming the first person of the States from Borneo to be elevated to the highest judicial office.
