Skype update brings @mentions, HD video and more – Tech News

Microsoft has described some of the new features coming with the latest version of Skype (8.0) for Windows 10.

Faced with increasingly fierce competition – even on desktop computers, from the Web versions of Messenger and WhatsApp – Microsoft is improving Skype's user experience to make its messaging platform even more intuitive.

Skype 8.0 offers video calling and HD screen sharing (1080p), allowing users to meet between one and 24 people at a time. Microsoft also makes the service more interactive by allowing users to respond to messages in group conversations, such as on social networks, by mentioning other participants using the @ symbol followed by their name.

With the Microsoft update, Skype users can share up to 300 MB of files at once (photos, videos, documents, etc.) just by dragging and dropping them into the conversation window . Plus, shared files and links in conversations can be found in a convenient place – the chat chat gallery – making them easier to find at any time. Skype also integrates a notification center with all the mentions and reactions of the users to their messages, as well as robots, artificially intelligent programs to help in finding news or booking tickets.

version 8.0 will work after September 1st.
