KOTA KINABALU: A rescued elephant died at the Elephant Sanctuary in Borneo, Kinabatangan, on Wednesday, 11 July.
The elephant named "Sapu" was trapped when he was rescued from the Sapagaya Waterfall Danum Valley Forest Reserve on June 1.
Sapu was found with two tightly tied rope traps around his front legs with deep wounds. However, he had recovered and responded well to the treatments.
Augustine Tuuga, director of the Sabah Wildlife Department, said that Sapu had collapsed in the morning and died around 4 pm without regaining consciousness. "We will reveal the cause of death once we know it," Tuuga said when we contacted him.
Meanwhile, a Sabah-based wildlife advocate said that animal trap traps are more lethal than bullets.
"Almost anybody can have or do the traps," says the environmental advocate who did not want to be named.
Although the poacher who sets the traps may aim at other animals such as wild boars, larger creatures, including elephants, may still be victims and die a long dying death.
