PKR vice-president Tian Chua issues a plea for reconciliation within the party.

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Tian Chua today congratulated deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali for defending his post against Rafizi Ramli in the party elections.

He also praised Rafizi for his efforts in challenging Azmin for the position, voicing confidence that the former Pandan MP would be given a party post in recognition of his contributions.

“Now it is time for reconciliation at all levels for the consolidation of the party,” he said in a statement.

He acknowledged that there were still many weaknesses and shortcomings in PKR’s efforts to adopt a system of direct democracy, where each individual has a say in determining the party’s leadership and policies.

He also said there were times when he was embarrassed and saddened by the conduct of some during the election, calling their behaviour inexcusable.

“Yes, there are still some discrepancies here and there. Some issues have yet to be resolved – minor objections, adjustments to vote counts, disputes over procedures and so on.

“By this stage, all of us should wind down and start to reconcile. We must return to one family,” he said.

Tian Chua also advised party members to refocus their attention on serving the people, adding that those who were not legislators had to begin the reconstruction process to strengthen PKR at the grassroots level and repair its public image.

Last night, Azmin tweeted his thanks for being given the mandate to retain his position as deputy president, amid controversies over the election process in the Julau division in Sarawak where results were suspended following allegations of tampering.
