DAP member Zaid Ibrahim advised his former party, Umno, to oppose Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's economic policy in order to gain more support from the Malaysian people.
In a blog post today, he said that Umno had to be modern and progressive, while understanding that the Malays "want most things for free".
"The Malays want most things for free. They want increased social protection (social benefits) and better access to cheap housing. It is therefore necessary that the economic orientation of Umno be oriented towards a controlled socialist state offering leeway to private activities.
"It's the opposite of Mahathir's economic policy.
"To be credible, Umno must oppose Mahathir's laissez-faire economy. They must oppose his privatization plans and the sale of state assets, "he said, calling the prime minister" Margaret Thatcher of Malaysia. "
Zaid also linked the loss of Umno to BN in the 14th general election and Mahathir's economic policies during his first term as prime minister.
"Umno was stuck in politics for a long time because for 20 years they were afraid to oppose him.
"Then, over the next twenty years, the leaders got rich by taking advantage of these policies. This greed settled deeply and finally led to the defeat of May 9, because this policy could no longer satisfy the Malays, "he said.
The former law minister and MP for Kota Baru urged Umno to step out of this mold and work to ensure that politics is upright and inclusive while helping Malays to succeed.
Regarding the government of Pakatan Harapan, Zaid explained how their manifesto The promises of a welfare state were now overturned by "billionaires and others".
"Look at their manifesto (GE14) and you will see that it was written by idealists and academics who painted a picture of hope for an egalitarian and egalitarian country.
