PETALING JAYA: Mustapa Mohamed, former member of the Supreme Council of Umno, officially joined the PPBM.

Mustapa has personally submitted his membership form to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, chairman of the PPBM.

A letter of acceptance, along with a membership card, was immediately sent to Mustapa by PPBM President Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a speech that followed, Mustapa expressed gratitude to the party leaders for accepting it.

"After being an independent MP for a few weeks, I made the decision to join the PPBM.

"I wish to thank the leaders for accepting me in the party.

"I will be able to play a more effective role in the interest of my constituents in Jeli," he said.

Mustapa said he supports measures taken by the federal government to strengthen the country's fiscal position and ensure sustainable growth.

"I also hope to help the PPBM empower the Bumiputeras and help formulate plans for all Malaysians," he said.

Mahathir said the party had given Mustapa time to be an independent MP.

"After seeing his position, we agree that he is qualified to become a member of the PPBM," he said.

The former Minister of Commerce and Industry left Umno last month, claiming that the leadership taken by the party was not in keeping with its principles.

The deputy from Jeli, better known as Tok Pa, has been a member of Umno for 40 years.

With the arrival of Mustapa to the party, the PPBM now has 14 deputies in the Dewan Rakyat.
