KUALA LUMPUR: Former International Trade and Industry minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed (pic) says he has no intention of quitting his post as the Jeli MP.

In his debate on the Mid-Term Review report of the 11th Malaysia Plan, he thanked the Jeli voters for accepting his decision to be an independent lawmaker, adding that he would continue with his duties.

“Insya-Allah, I will not resign and will continue to fight for their rights within and outside of the Dewan Rakyat,” he said on Tuesday (Oct 23).

Mustapa resigned from Umno on Sept 18 after over 40 years with the party, saying that Umno’s current direction is not in line with his political principles.

The former Kelantan Umno chief said there was hardly any convincing effort to rejuvenate the party and felt that, based on the latest development, it was getting difficult to salvage the diminishing trust deficit and Umno’s image.

Asked by R.S.N. Rayer (PH-Jelutong) whether Mustapa would join Pakatan Harapan, the former minister said he has yet to make any decision on this.

“Insya-Allah, when I make any decision, I will make an announcement to the world,” he quipped.
