Reports by HEMANANTHANI SIVANANDAM, MARTIN CARVALHO AND RAHIMY RAHIM
TOLL concessionaires have collected more than double the cost of the construction of highways since the start of their operations until 2017, says Works Minister Baru Bian.
He said there are 29 tolled highways that are still on concessions.
“The total amount of construction cost for 29 highways is RM35.14bil. The amount of compensation paid (to concessionaires) from 1990 to 2017 is RM5.109bil and the total amount of toll collected since they started operation to 2017 is RM74.654bil,” he told Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir (PH-Johor Baru) during Question Time.
Baru said the average total operational and maintenance cost for the highways is about RM2.5bil a year.
Routine maintenance stood at RM402mil annually and periodic maintenance and upgrade costs is about RM459mil a year, he added.
Baru also said that there are two concessions ending in 2028, 16 concessions ending between 11 and 20 years and 11 highways where tolls will be collected for the next two decades.
He said his ministry was given six months to negotiate with the stakeholders and concessionaires on Pakatan Harapan’s GE14 manifesto to abolish toll.
“We will submit proposals based on the ongoing negotiations.”
