WhatsApp stickers get an upgrade, thanks to a new service

WhatsApp stickers are great, but they’re still a little limited as there isn’t a huge selection available. Stickerpop thinks it has solved that problem though with a marketplace for people to buy stickers.

The app also offers some features that WhatsApp doesn’t yet. For example you can search for stickers, which is coming soon to the messaging app but is still currently being tested ahead of launch.

The other thing that WhatsApp doesn’t offer, and may not, any time soon is the ability to make stickers from your own selfies. Once you’ve snapped a selfie the app with cut your face out and remove the background.

It does this using AI to get the best results. It’s not clear if it makes use of the front-facing depth camera on the iPhone to assist with this, but results were decent. If you have “big hair” you might get some weird results though.

As well as WhatsApp the service can also pop stickers into your iMessages and Facebook Messenger. The WhatsApp feature is arriving soon, but wasn’t available as we tested the app – so presumably an update is coming.

There’s also a weird option to print an actual, real life sticker from your favourites. That might appeal to some people, perhaps their own selfie for attaching to their phone or tablet.

Search stickers and add them to WhatsApp

We took a look at the app to see what was on offer and it’s surprisingly good actually. The search reveals a decent selection of high-quality stickers and many of them are free – the company says about 50 per cent don’t cost a penny.

The big problem is that the app isn’t currently available on Android devices – only iPhone users can play with this one.

The other downside is that some stickers do require payment. The app offers subscriptions, at either $2.49 per week, $5.99 per month or $39.99 for a year. It seems that the free functionality is worth giving it a try though.
