Xiaomi has just announced its new flagship, the Mi MIX 3. This handset has been leaking or months now, and it seems like the leaks that arrived in the last couple of weeks were spot on, as the device does sport a manual sliding camera mechanism, and on top of that, it is almost completely bezel-less. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 is a successor to both the Mi MIX 2 which arrived a year ago, and the Mi MIX 2S which was announced earlier this year. The Mi MIX 3 comes with a brand new processor, and even sleeker design compared to its predecessor, not to mention that it also brings some new tech to the table. Having said that’s let’s see what the phone has to offer, starting with its specifications.
Snapdragon 845 & Up To 10GB Of RAM
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 has plenty to offer in the spec department, the device features a 6.39-inch fullHD+ (2340 x 1080) AMOLED display which gets up to 600 nits of brightness. The phone is fueled by the best SoC Qualcomm has to offer now, the Snapdragon 845 64-bit octa-core processor. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 has been announced in several variants, the 6GB RAM model comes with 128GB of storage, the 8GB RAM (LPDDR4X) variant of the phone comes in both 128GB and 256GB storage (UFS 2.1) flavors, while the 10GB RAM model packs in 256GB of storage (UFS 2.1). Android 8.1 Oreo comes pre-installed on the phone with Xiaomi’s MIUI 10 skin, while the phone also includes two SIM card slots (2x nano SIM). The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 does support dual 4G VoLTE, packs in Bluetooth 5, and features a Type-C USB port on the bottom, but not a 3.5mm headphone jack. Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band (4×4 MU-MIMO) is also included in the package.
A 3,850mAh battery, which is not removable, comes included in the Mi MIX 3, while the device sports a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, unlike some Mi 8 variants which come with an in-display module. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 features two cameras on its back, two 12-megapixel cameras. The main sensor comes with a 26mm wide-angle lens, and we’re looking at Sony’s IMX363 sensor here, and an f/1.8 aperture. On top of all that, 4-axis OIS is included here as well, and this camera is capable of 4K recording, while it has 1.4um size pixels. The secondary camera is here for loss-less zoom, Samsung’s S5K3M3+ sensor is included, and we’re looking at 1.0um pixel size here, and an f/2.4 aperture.
The Mi MIX 3 Is Almost Completely Bezel-Less
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 is made out of metal and ceramic, the phone’s frame is made out of metal, while its back is ceramic, as was the case with the phone’s predecessor, the Mi MIX 2S. The Mi MIX 3 sports a higher screen-to-body ratio than the Mi MIX 2S, which is noticeable when you look at the phone, as the device comes with a 93.4-percent screen-to-body ratio. The bottom bezel’s size has been reduced by 4.46mm compared to the Mi MIX 2S, while the phone also comes with a customized antenna design which allowed Xiaomi to reduce antenna space in the hpone by 72-percent. The Mi MIX 3 also comes with a dedicated AI button on the left, which is located below the phone’s volume rockers.
The phone also sports “magnetic slider design” with neodymium permanent magnets, which, the company claims, will make the sliding screen more reliable and functional. You can personalize the sliding motion by selecting one of five sliding sounds, if you want, and Xiaomi claims that the sliding design will last for 300,000 cycles. The phone’s back is curved on the sides, while there are two vertically-aligned cameras, and the phone’s LED flash is located in-between those two cameras. The phone’s display sports rounded corners, while the power / lock key sits on the right side of the phone.
Sliding Mechanism For The Device’s Front-Facing Cameras
Before we get around to the phone’s front-facing cameras, let’s first talk about its rear-facing ones. The device’s rear-facing cameras are accessible at all times, and you don’t need to utilize the sliding mechanism in order to access them. There are two cameras located on the back, two 12-megapixel ones. The main 12-megapixel camera features 4-axis OIS, 1.4um pixel size, f/1.8 aperture, and a 26mm wide-angle lens. Sony’s IMX363 sensor is utilized here, and the camera can shoot both 4K videos, and utilize 960FPS slo-mo recording. The second 12-megapixel camera is used for lossless zoom, Samsung’s S5K3M3+ sensor is utilized here, and we’re looking at a 1.0um pixel size here, and f/2.4 aperture.
If you ever feel the need to make a video call, or take a selfie, all you need to do is manually slide the display up, and that’s when the phone’s front-facing cameras will be automatically activated. The phone’s cameras slide out from behind the display, and the company claims that this sliding mechanism is good for 300,000 cycles, which is interesting. As already mentioned, you can choose sound which will be played once the sliding takes place, and there are two cameras that will come to light once you utilize this mechanism. The Mi MIX 3 has 24-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras on the front. The 24-megapixel camera comes with Super Pixel low-light technology, while the secondary 2-megapixel sensor is actually a DOF camera. It is also worth noting that the Mi MIX 3 got a 103 points overall score in DxOMark’s test, 108 for photography, and 93 for video.
Large Battery & Wireless Charging
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 comes with a 3,850mAh battery, which is quite large, but so is the phone’s display, in all honesty. This battery is not removable, and it does support fast charging. Xiaomi did not specify whether you’ll get Quick Charge 3.0 or 4+ with this smartphone, but as soon as they do, we will update this article. As far as wireless charging is concerned, the Mi MIX 3 allows you to utilize 10W Qi wireless charging, all you need is a charging pad that is able to provide such speeds. The Mi MIX 3 is compatible with pretty much every Qi charging pad out there, though, even if it offers slower charging speeds. The company did not share any battery stats, though, so we do not know what exactly to expect out of this battery just yet.
No 5G Support, Yet
Xiaomi did tease 5G support for the Mi MIX 3 quite recently, but the models that were introduced today do not offer such support. You won’t be able to take advantage of 5G until H2 next year anyway (at the earliest), and Xiaomi did say that it will launch a 5G Mi MIX 3 model in Q1 next year, though, so… those of you who would like to be 5G ready will have to wait a bit longer. It’s also worth saying that the 5G edition of the phone will be available in Europe, we’re not sure for the variants that were introduced today.
Mi MIX 3 Comes In Several Variants, Including A Special Edition 10GB RAM One
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 got announced in Onyx Black, Jade Green, and Sapphire Blue color variants, while the phone comes in both 8GB and 10GB RAM options. The 6GB RAM variant with 128GB of storage is priced at 3,299 Yuan ($474) in China, while the 8GB RAM model with 128GB of storage costs 3,599 Yuan ($518). The 8GB RAM model with 256GB of storage comes with a price tag of 3,999 Yuan ($575), while the most expensive model features 10GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and it costs 4,999 Yuan ($719). The 10GB RAM variant of the phone is called ‘The Palace Museum’ Special Edition Mi MIX 3, and it comes with 24K gold-coated bronze statue. The phone will go on sale in China starting on November 1, while Xiaomi did not share the Mi MIX 3’s international availability info just yet, but it will soon.
