The SD Association, the organization that sets the standards for memory cards, is viewing its latest development at Mobile World Congress Asia in Shanghai: the SD Express, a format that could open new perspectives for Memory cards – And it could be right around the corner.

SD Express will improve transfer speeds up to 985 megabytes per second via the PCIe interface and, significantly, the format will increase storage capacity up to 128 terabytes.

Previously, the maximum storage capacity available in memory cards was 2 TB with the SDXC, released in 2010, although this card size is still rare to find.

The new 128 TB memory cards will be called SD Ultra Capacity (SDUC), but there is no word yet

Consumers still pay more than US $ 100 (RM404) for SD cards of 256 GB, so we can expect 128 TB cards to cost a nice penny every time they arrive

. This means that soon, memory cards can be used for devices and applications that move large amounts of data at high speed, for example for mobile phones, gaming systems or cameras.

The Mobile World Congress in Shanghai is the largest mobile event in Asia and runs until June 29th. – dpa
