Maleah Davis, the four-year-old Houston girl who has been the subject of intensive searches for nearly three weeks, was probably murdered, the city's top policeman said Thursday.

Davis was allegedly missing by his mother's boyfriend, who was imprisoned for his disappearance. Although officials say Davis is supposed to be dead, the authorities have still not found his remains.

"We really believe that a little girl was murdered. We think she is somewhere and we want to take her home, "said police chief Art Acevedo.

He appealed to the public to help find the girl.

Derby Vence, a 26-year-old boyfriend, told the police that men in a truck had kidnapped him, Maleah and his 2-year-old son, but had released him, as well as the boy. He reported his disappearance on May 5th.

Vence was arrested on May 12 under the charge of falsifying evidence after police learned that trained dogs had detected the smell of human decomposition in his vehicle. The police say they also found blood in his apartment, linked to Maleah.

"We firmly believe that he knows where she is and if he wanted to tell us, he would do it," said Acevedo, according to KTVT.
