The Browns have added veteran Malik Jackson on a one-year contract to help improve their defensive line.

They could also sign Jadeveon Clowney for the same purpose, having brought in the defensive end for a visit earlier this month.

But on Wednesday, Jackson said he didn’t need to sell Clowney by coming to Cleveland, which made the playoffs for the first time since 2002 last season.

“It’s one of those things that the team speaks for itself and what we’re trying to build speaks for itself,” Jackson said, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “If you want to get on board, get on board. I understand that the free agency market is probably not what it wants, but things are more important than dollar value and you have the chance to be part of a great team and settle down in the future. “

Jackson also didn’t hesitate to call the Browns a Super Bowl contender. It’s a statement that may seem like an exaggeration to tie to Cleveland, but the club were one of the last eight teams alive in the playoffs and gave Kansas City everything they could handle.

“If you don’t say your team is going to the Super Bowl, then you’re wrong,” Jackson said. “You have to have these expectations that you want to meet.”

As the Browns finished 11-5 last season in their first year under head coach Kevin Stefanski, the bar has been raised. After spending two years in Philadelphia, Jackson can’t wait to be in Cleveland in 2021.

“I am delighted to be able to help transform a culture that has already changed and to be able to say that I have helped this team go even further than before,” he said. “That’s what excites me, just trying to make this team a part of history.”
