Man accused of homicide and three homicide attempts

Jonathan Bertsch, 29, is at Missoula County Jail and charged with one count of willful homicide and three counts of attempted manslaughter after a shootout that occurred. Thursday night in Missoula and ended near Evaro.

When the police arrived, they found Julie Blanchard and his son Casey injured, as well as another man, Shelley Hayes, who died from gunshot wounds.

Ms. Blanchard stated that she had gone to a bar to pick up her son Casey and her friend Shelley and that she had remembered seeing a white Cadillac Escalade on the parking lot. Leaving the parking lot, Escalade followed and started flashing his headlights. Mrs. Blanchard stopped, thinking that the other driver might need help, and when his son got out of the truck, Bertsch opened fire, injuring him several times. The car dealer's surveillance video showed a man firing at the truck with a handgun.

The search for the vehicle was turned over to the Missoula County Sheriff's Office and the Montana Road Patrol.

At 12:12, the Montana Highway patrol soldier, Wade Palmer, radioed that he was under fire at kilometer 7 of Highway 93 North, near Bar Evaro. Private Rob Strauch, Missoula Police and Missoula County Sheriff's Assistants arrived at Private Palmer's home and found that he was shot and was unconscious. He was taken to St. Patrick's Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

At 4:24 pm, a citizen calls 9-1-1 to report that a white climb is parked on Grooms Road. A Sheriff from Missoula County made contact with Bertsch and detained him without incident.

He is currently held without a commitment at the Missoula County Jail and will appear in Missoula Court Monday at 2:30 pm.
