A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly using a rope to descend into a Japanese store and steal Pokémon cards and money, according to a report by Mainichi (via Kotaku).
Tokyo resident Kensuke Nakanishi is suspected of being taken down from a six-story roof at a top-floor store in the Higashi-Ikebukuro neighborhood around 5 a.m. on March 23. Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon cards, as well as 260,000 yen ($ 2,370) in cash at the store office.
Nakanishi is said to have subsequently told authorities that he had committed the act to repay a debt. Ikebukuro police approached Nakanishi as a suspect after being identified through security camera footage.
Obviously, Nakanishi was not terribly out of his element during the flight, telling police, “I was in the high school climbing club, so I wasn’t afraid of heights.”
Nakanishi really only had to climb five meters (~ 16 feet) from the top of the six-story building to a sixth-story window, which he allegedly pierced using an unidentified tool.
Decades after their worldwide debut, Pokémon Trading Cards still have impressive resale values. In 2019, collectors offered a reward of $ 1,000 for information leading to a $ 60,000 Pokémon card. Most recently, McDonald’s Pokémon cards sold as part of Happy Meals were scavenged by scalpers.
