Jose Navarrete, 25, entered the elephant enclosure with his daughter after crossing several barriers, the statement said.

Once the father and daughter were inside the compound, an elephant noticed the couple and started trotting towards them, the statement said. When Navarrete tried to get out of the compound with her two-year-old, he dropped her but was able to look for her.

“There were no injuries to Navarrete, his daughter or the elephant,” the statement said.

Navarrete was booked into the San Diego County Jail, police said. He is accused of child cruelty and is currently being held on $ 100,000 bond.

CNN has not been able to determine whether he is represented by legal counsel at this time and could not reach him for comment.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the San Diego Police Department.
