KATY, Texas (KTRK) – A Katy-area mother has died and her two children are injured after a shootout and an overnight SWAT scene.

Harris County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an active shooting at a home in the 2700 block of Roaring Oaks Lane around 8:50 p.m. Thursday.

When MPs arrived, they found a woman dead from a gunshot wound outside.

The suspected gunman barricaded himself inside and threatened to kill himself, MPs said. It was then that the SWAT stalemate began.

The suspect, identified as Lawrence Reed, eventually surrendered to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office SWAT officers.

His wife, Valerie Junius, has been identified as the shot woman.

MPs said the motive for the shooting appeared to be a lingering domestic disruption between the couple.

Junius’ two children, a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old woman, were also shot. MPs say they are recovering in hospital.

ABC13 spoke to a neighbor next door who called 911.

“The kids came running outside when I heard the gunshots for the first time and told my friend I would call her back,” recalls Candis Jackson. “That’s when they started running outside and saying, ‘He shot my mother. He shot her.’ I called 911 and heard several shots. “

Investigators say their team moved quickly to put the suspect in handcuffs.

“Our hostage negotiators did a terrific job talking to the suspect for about 25 to 30 minutes,” Deputy Chief Edison Toquica said. “They took him out of the house and he is currently in detention.”

Reed was arrested and charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He is being held at the Harris County Jail.
