SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A 44-year-old man has been arrested after repeatedly refusing to wear a face mask on a Delta Airlines flight departing from Salt Lake City International Airport.

The incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the probable cause statement, counsel for Joshua Colby continued to board a Delta Airlines flight from Salt Lake City to San Francisco after ignoring a request from a gate agent to cover his face.

“The flight attendants and the crew attempted to [Council] wear a mask, however [he] became argumentative and refused, ”the document reads.

Officials said several of the crew – including the captain, the gatekeeper and the manager – tried to convince the council to put on a mask, but refused to comply.

Police were then called to escort the passenger off the plane.

“Many attempts have been made to encourage [him] to leave with negative results, ”the document continues.

The Council eventually left the plane after several dozen passengers were told to exit. But once at the door, he refused to hand over his ID card and was arrested.

He was held in Salt Lake County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct for refusing to comply with a police order.

Crew members said the flight was delayed by approximately 45 minutes due to the incident.

Delta Airlines later issued a statement saying, “We apologize to customers for the delay on flight 1382 on Wednesday as a passenger was removed from the flight for mask failure. There is nothing more important than the safety of our employees and our customers. “
