A lead-footed driver whose car racked up more than 90 speeding tickets near city schools and usually didn’t stop at red lights has been arrested in the hit-and-run that killed a girl from 3 months in Brooklyn, police said on Sunday.
Tyrik Mott, 28, was arrested shortly after the reverse accident that left the baby dead and injured three others around 6 p.m. Saturday in Clinton Hill, police said. He was caught after he fled the scene on foot and tried to steal the car of another driver, authorities said.
Mott allegedly drove a dark silver 2017 Honda Civic in the wrong direction on Gates Avenue when he collided with a black 2020 Honda Civic driven by a 49-year-old woman on Vanderbilt Avenue, cops have said.
The 2017 Honda, which had Pennsylvania plates, had been captured by automatic radars passing Big Apple schools at least 10 mph above the speed limit 91 times since fall 2017, according to files from the city.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested for speeding in school zones an astonishing 35 times in 2021 alone, including seven violations since the start of the summer, records show.
The car has also been caught at a red light 14 times since 2017 – and on five occasions in recent months, the data shows.
On Saturday, a 33-year-old pedestrian, a 36-year-old pedestrian and a 3-month-old girl, who was in a stroller, were struck by the vehicles, police said. The baby flew 15 to 20 feet in the air, a witness told the Post. The identities of the victims were not disclosed.
Mott then allegedly left on foot and attempted to steal the 2020 Hyundai from a 41-year-old driver, cops said. He was arrested soon after and charged with attempted robbery, attempted robbery, resisting arrest and obstructing government administration, officials said.
“When this guy first fled the scene, he tried to steal another vehicle to escape the police,” a police spokesperson said.
The critically injured baby was rushed to Brooklyn hospital but could not be rescued. Her mother was taken to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and listed in serious condition.
The 36-year-old was taken to Brooklyn Hospital in stable condition. The 49-year-old was taken to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in stable condition.
