Stuart Bee was reported missing after failing to return from a boat trip.
A 62-year-old Florida man, whose family reported missing on Friday after he failed to return from a boat trip, was found alive on Sunday, clinging to the hull of his capsized ship off the coast of Florida, officials said.
The stranded sailor, Stuart Bee, was spotted on Sunday by the crew of the 225-foot container ship Angeles, holding the hull of his boat in the Atlantic Ocean about 86 miles off Port Canaveral, officials said. US Coast Guard. .
“It’s amazing. It’s 86 miles offshore,” US Coast Guard Petty Officer Veronica Dunn-Depretis told ABC News of Bee’s survival, adding that he was lucky to to be alive.
She said Bee was uninjured and it was not immediately clear why her 32-foot pleasure boat, named Sting Ray, capsized.
“He’s doing fine. We’re getting reports from the powerboat (Angeles) that there was no medical problem,” Dunn-Depretis said.
She said when Bee was located he was standing about four feet from the hull of the boat sticking out of the water.
“He was clinging to that when they ran into him and they got him on their ship,” Dunn-Depretis said.
Bee’s ordeal began sometime after she left the Port Canaveral marina on Friday evening, Dunn-Depretis said. She said Bee planned to be on the water for only several hours.
When he did not return, his family and officials at the Port Canaveral marina contacted the Coast Guard.
Dunn-Depretis said a search was launched immediately and an emergency message was transmitted by radio to commercial vessels far offshore to be on the hunt for bees.
She said the Angeles was one of the ships that started looking for Bee. She said the Angeles crew spotted Bee around 11:40 a.m. and took him out of danger.
