A man committed suicide outside the Dallas home in the U.S. suburb of Beth Van Duyne on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Irving Police responded to a report of a shooting around 3:45 p.m. local time, Constable Robert Reeves said. Upon arrival, they found a man on the sidewalk who had committed suicide with a handgun.

Van Duyne was at the house at the time with other people but did not witness the incident, Reeves said. They heard the gunshot and called 911 when they discovered the man lying on the sidewalk.

The medical examiner is working to identify the man.

Investigators will examine the motive and how the man entered the gated community of Van Duyne.

Police said there was no reason to believe there was another threat to Van Duyne, a Republican. The FBI is participating in the investigation.

A spokeswoman for Van Duyne said the congresswoman was “shocked and saddened that someone would kill themselves. We have no further comment at this time,” according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
