Man-generated or computer-generated? Epic Games unveils ‘MetaHumans’

CARY – Epic Games takes another step forward in creating digital human images that look like us. On Wednesday, Epic unveiled “MetaHumans” via its video game development engine Unreal

In an “eternal peak”, Epic claims that users can create “high fidelity digital humans”.

The tool is called MetaHuman Creator, and Epic says it can “enable anyone to create a fully rigged, bespoke, photorealistic digital human, complete with hair and clothing, in minutes.

The new development comes after Epic acquired real-time facial animation technology startup Hyprsense last November. Hyprsense says its technology will give “the creators of Unreal Engine the ability to deploy and pilot the most advanced character assets, on any platform.”

“MetaHuman Creator is a cloud-delivered application that takes real-time digital human creation from weeks, or even months, to less than an hour, to an unprecedented level of quality, fidelity and realism,” says the Unreal development team. “When your character is finished, you can export and download it, rigged and ready to be animated in Unreal Engine.”

Achieving “photo realism” was a stated goal of Epic when it unveiled a new version of the Unreal Engine last year.

Epic, better known today as the developer of the Fortnite game, has invested heavily in bringing more realism to its Unreal engine, which is one of the most widely used in the video game industry.

It seems that all of this research is paying off.
