Man killed after trying to "trap" police in Kalamazoo

A man who "wanted to ambush" police was killed Tuesday in a plasma collection center in southwestern Michigan during a shootout that injured an officer, authorities said.

An officer from Kalamazoo was hit on the chest, but his injury was not life-threatening because of a bullet-proof vest, said Karianne Thomas, the city's public safety officer.

Another officer fired several times and killed the suspect, said Thomas. The name of the deceased was not immediately published.

Lisa Walterhouse, an employee of the downtown plasma center, said the police reacted after the man entered the building and fired shots. She said that he urged staff to call 911.

He "wanted to ambush some officers." The suspect was waiting by the door for officers to arrive, "Thomas said. "They met gunshots and came back."

No other injuries have been reported. Thomas said that the police officer who had shot the suspect several times had been in the department for less than a year.

"We are not immune to workplace violence or violence directed against our first responders," said the chief.
