A swarm of bees killed a man and injured five others when their massive 100-pound beehive was disturbed at an Arizona home, authorities said.
Marana’s huge bee swarm attacked around noon Thursday, biting three people “hundreds of times”, according to the Northwest Fire District in Tucson. They were rushed to hospital and one victim – a man who had not yet been identified – was later pronounced dead.
Three firefighters who answered the call were also stung “several times”, officials said.
A victim was stung about 60 times and was taken to hospital before being treated and released.
“A large open beehive, estimated to be around 100 pounds, was located in a nearby tree”, firefighters said.
It was not immediately clear what species of bee was behind the carnage.
One photo showed a beekeeper near the tree in a residential yard. Marana police said the beehive and most of the bees had been removed, but warned residents to be on the alert for potential attacks.
“Although the area is much safer, there are still some evergreen bees,” police said in a statement. “Please continue to exercise caution in the region. Several people were injured and one person died of his injuries. “
Some 1,109 deaths from hornet, wasp and bee stings were recorded in the United States between 2000 and 2017, with about 62 deaths per year, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2019. About 80% of the victims were men.
