Man killed in shootout in southeast Portland, police say

A man was killed in a shootout in southeast Portland early Friday morning, police said.

At least a dozen Portland police responded to a shooting in the 500 block of 128th Avenue SE, where they found a man dead from a gunshot wound.

The suspect (s) left before the police were called, and no arrests were made.

A mobile command unit is at the scene in the Mill Park neighborhood, where police have blocked 128th Avenue southeast from Stark Street to Washington Street.

A man who lives in the same townhouse complex where the shooting took place said he heard someone shouting, “Put your (swear) hands up in the air,” at around 5:30 am, followed eight shots and a woman screaming.

The shooting took place inside a townhouse in the middle of a block between Stark and Alder on 128, just outside a busy part of Stark, where investigators were seen in gathering evidence later Friday morning.

A second neighbor, who lives a few houses away from the crime scene, said neighboring residents suspected the house where the shooting occurred was a ‘drug house’ with frequent visitors at all hours of the day. .

The neighbor, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years and asked not to be identified for reasons of personal safety, was not at home at the time of the shooting but said he regularly heard shots. fire, but never near his home.

He said he spoke to the owner earlier this week about his safety concerns after seeing someone bring what appeared to be an AR-15 into the townhouse.

“It slowly escalated,” he said. “It’s a shame because it’s actually a nice little neighborhood. Everyone knows each other. “

If named as a homicide by the medical examiner, that gunshot death would be the 68th in Portland in 2021.

Earlier this week, a man was killed in a shootout in the North Tabor neighborhood of northeast Portland. Police did not release the victim’s name in Wednesday night’s shooting, but said she was called to Northeast 60th Avenue and Everett Street around 9:30 p.m. on reports of gunfire and found a man who died from a gunshot wound.

The other person suspected of being involved remained at the scene, police said, and no suspects are wanted.
