A A man from Maryland plotting to drive a U-Haul truck into a crowd in the national harbor, just south of Washington, says he was inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group, according to federal prosecutors.

Rondell Henry, 28, arrested for driving a stolen vehicle across the state's borders, told authorities that he "would continue to drive, drive and drive." Henry chose the national port in Oxon Hill, Maryland, as a popular tourist destination outside of the nation's capital, authorities said.

According to court documents, Henry stole the U-Haul truck early in the morning of March 27 in Alexandria, Virginia. Police found Henry's registration documents in a BMW near the mall parking lot where the truck had been stolen and arrested him the next day at the national harbor.

The use of motor vehicles in deadly attacks against unsuspecting civilians has become a recurring theme in recent years. During a terrorist attack in 2016 in Nice, France, a man hit a truck in a crowd, killing over 80 people and injuring 450 others. And in 2017, a white nationalist drove a vehicle in a crowd, killing one and wounding dozens of other people. .

Henry would have been inspired by the videos of foreign terrorists, according to the detention note.

"We continue to gather evidence and review evidence already obtained as part of the ongoing investigation," said US Attorney Robert Hur.

The Justice Department is expected to release more details about the case Monday night.
