More than a dozen law enforcement vehicles were on the scene while dozens of officers and deputies roamed the area.

Gonzalez said the shooting happened when two MPs responded to a report of a suspicious person in the neighborhood. He said when they arrived, a man pulled out a gun and started shooting them. He said one of the MPs had been hit several times and the other was able to fight back. He said the man fled the scene.

The sheriff said the injured deputy, whom he only identified as Deputy Barragan, 35, suffered injuries to his hands, cheeks and back. Gonzalez said Barragan is listed in stable condition and should be OK.

Gonzalez said the injured deputy had been in the sheriff’s office for 18 months, but worked for another agency for eight years before becoming a Harris County MP.

The sheriff said he believed Martinez had two arrest warrants open at the time of the shooting.

This developing story will be updated.
