Man with an active felony warrant out of Bedford County posted bail and was released from DeWitt County Jail in Illinois before he could be extradited to Pennsylvania to face related charges to a shootout in 2020.

Bedford County District Lesley Childers-Potts said in a press release that she was “Disappointed and frustrated” that Orsino Von Thurman was released from Illinois prison.

Thurman was among a group of activists who stopped in Schellsburg between 11 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on August 24, 2020, on his way to a Black Lives Matter rally in Washington, DC

For his role in the ensuing melee, in which shots were fired, Thurman faced two counts of common assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm prohibited (due to three previous convictions), criminal mischief, trespassing provocative, aggravated assault and attempting to cause bodily harm with a lethal weapon.

Thurman did not appear in Bedford County Court to face the charges, and a felony arrest warrant was issued.

In Illinois, Thurman was charged last week with several offenses in DeWitt County, including domestic assault and battery, aggravated flight from the police, child abduction, endangering life or the health of a child and several counts of possession of a weapon by a criminal. In addition to charges resulting from an incident on September 15, Thurman was also charged with an extradition complaint, a direct result of pending charges in Bedford County.

“My office and the DeWitt County, Illinois district attorney’s office entered into a dialogue almost immediately after Thurman’s arrest. Childers-Potts said, noting that she had confirmed to authorities in Illinois that her office would extradite Thurman to Pennsylvania for trial.

But on Monday, Childers-Potts received a notice from DeWitt County that Thurman was refusing to waive his extradition to Bedford County.

Bail has been set for all counts, including the extradition case.

Before the shops closed on Tuesday, bail was posted and Thurman was released from prison. Childers-Potts was told on Wednesday that Thurman had posted bond the day before.

“I was hoping the state attorney would be able to successfully plead for a higher bail amount,” said Childers-Potts.

“Despite the very serious charges that Mr. Thurmon faces and the multiple warrants in multiple jurisdictions, an Illinois judge saw fit to set a bond that only required $ 20,000 in bond to be posted,” she said in a statement.

“Sir. Thurman would have broken the law in several states and put the lives of people in danger. The roadblocks we face will not prevent my office from continuing to fight to extradite Orsino Thurman to Pennsylvania,” she declared.

According to the Illinois charges, Thurman assaulted a woman, abducted a 6-week-old baby and led the police to the pursuit. Police reported that Thurman was in possession of four firearms, including a .22 caliber rifle, rifle, 9mm handgun and .22 caliber handgun at the time of his arrest on September 15. .
