A New Orleans police officer providing security at a high school basketball game was gunned down Friday night by a man who was refused entry to the competition for not wearing a mask required by the rules coronavirus, according to police.
Police said John Shallerhorn, 35, wanted to play in the George Washington Carver High School playoff game at his home gym against Warren Easton High at around 6:15 p.m. but was prohibited from doing so for not wearing mask. Shallerhorn got into a fight with a school worker before Martinus Mitchum, 38, a Tulane University police officer and a moonlit 2nd Municipal Court deputy police officer at the school to ensure security, does not intervene to break the fray, announced Saturday the investigators.

Mitchum, 38, was escorting Shallerhorn off campus in the 3000 block of Higgins Boulevard when Shallerhorn allegedly pulled a gun and shot Mitchum twice. Shallerhorn put his gun on the ground and deputies from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office who were also at the school arrested him, authorities said.
Paramedics brought Mitchum to the hospital, where staff declared him dead.

Police said Shallerhorn also stole a chain of medallions from a 39-year-old man sitting in a car in the Carver parking lot on Friday evening. Shallerhorn allegedly approached this victim brandishing a gun, police said.

Investigators jailed Shallerhorn for first degree murder of a police officer and armed robbery. He would face life imprisonment or the death penalty if found guilty of murdering a police officer.
Shallerhorn’s bond had not been fixed on Saturday morning.
