A man with an assault rifle was shot and wounded outside a Missouri state highway patrol building near Kansas City on Monday evening, authorities said.
No one else was injured in the shooting, which occurred around 9:40 p.m. at the A Troop headquarters atop Lee.
The man “wanted to do harm,” the state patrol sergeant said. Bill Lowe told reporters, noting that this was at the start of the investigation and more details of the man’s motives were not known.

A soldier spotted the man after he entered the headquarters parking lot and exited his vehicle with an assault rifle, Lowe said.
“The soldier gave the suspect several orders,” then radioed to inform the others, Lowe said.
Two soldiers drew their service weapons, he said. He wasn’t sure the man who had been injured fired his gun.
“There was nothing the soldiers could have done differently,” Lowe said.
The man was taken to hospital, but his condition was not immediately released.
Soldiers and civilian employees work in the building.
Lee’s Summit is southeast of Kansas City, Missouri.
