‘You can’t get away with your league manager on Sunday’: Manchester United fans believe Bruno Fernandes told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make a replacement after Fred was sent off in the Champions League by PSG
- Bruno Fernandes appeared to scream towards the bench in the 73rd minute
- Shortly after, Paul Pogba replaced Marcus Rashford for Manchester United
- Some United fans fear the exchange points to unease within the club
Bruno Fernandes has made an electrifying impression at Manchester United since leaving Sporting Lisbon in January – and some supporters now believe his influence is spreading behind managers.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were beaten 3-1 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, meaning their European destiny will come down to their last group game against RB Leipzig.
But United fans discovered an incident during the meeting which left them wondering if Fernandes was giving Solskjaer instructions on how to handle the squad in the second half.
Bruno Fernandes played the full 90 minutes in Manchester United’s 3-1 loss to PSG
Some United fans have resumed an exchange between Fernandes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
This happened in the 73rd minute. As PSG brought the ball over the center line Fernandes can be heard shouting what sounds like ‘Ole’ and then gesturing towards the bench.
The Portuguese midfielder’s attention quickly turns to the pitch and the pattern of play unfolding in front of him, but in the 74th minute Solskajer called in Paul Pogba instead of Marcus Rashford.
United needed an extra midfield presence at that point – Fred was sent off for a second bookable offense in the 70th minute and United were reduced to 10 men. The Brazil international was fortuitous in avoiding red in the first half after appearing to strike Leandro Paredes in the head.
But it was Fernandes’ alleged exchange with Solskjaer that seemed to be of greater concern to a number of United supporters on social media.
Paul Pogba replaced Marcus Rashford shortly after Fernandes signaled to Solskjaer, but some United fans fear the incident will mean deeper unease at the club.
“ A little late, but I just saw Bruno yelling at Ole to make a sub last night? You can’t really get away with this discussion with your Sunday league manager, ” one Twitter user wrote.
Another said: ‘I just watched the highlights of MU vs PSG. I can’t believe Bruno told Ole to make a sub. The teacher of EPS!’
A United supporter said the incident made them fear Solskjaer may have lost the dressing room, saying: ‘It makes me a little nervous that Bruno is getting mad at ole (sic) for not making an under- sailors, the first signs that he could lose the locker room. ‘
United return to action on Wednesday night with a tough trip to fifth-place West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday night. These will be the first Premier League games with the fans returning, as London is at level two after the domestic lockdown ends.
United are ninth in the Premier League but have a match underway which, right now, would put them tied on points with third-placed Chelsea and just two behind early leaders Tottenham.
