Manny Machado, one of the best free agents available on the market, has reached an agreement with the San Diego Padres, ESPN's Jeff Passan told Tuesday sources close to the league.
Machado, a four-time star and two-time Gold Glove winner at third, won $ 16 million between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles last season.
The 26-year-old slugger posted a .905 OPS record in 2018, finishing the season with a .297 / .367 / .538 slash, 37 home runs, 107 RBIs and 14 stolen goals. In 66 regular-season games with the Dodgers, Machado averaged .273 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs.
Machado spent most of last season at the favorite stop, which earned him the third total of defensive defenses saved (minus 13) out of the 22 players with enough heat to qualify there. The 26-year-old played a better save by joining the Dodgers, who surrendered five minor leagues to win the Orioles on July 18, but his 15 weeks at LA were tumultuous.
Former No. 3 seed in the overall standings has been the subject of constant criticism for constantly sniffing the first goal line and then fanning the flames when he told Fox Sports in the playoffs that shaking his head was was not my cup of tea.
"He got booed in Baltimore three weeks before we bought it," said Andrew Friedman of the Dodgers at the November 6 General Managers' meeting. Machado had several highlights with the Dodgers, many as the team fought for a sixth consecutive division title in September and a few others in a winning streak of the NL championship. But he only hit 0.182 in the World Series, qualifying for the final as the Boston Red Sox win the championship.
Machado was limited to 82 games in 2014, but played at least 156 games in each of the four seasons. He has hit at least 30 homers and 30 doubles in each of those four seasons, making him one of two players, along with Colorado's Nolan Arenado, to reach both marks every season since 2015.
He has compiled 29 Top Rated Victory FanGraphs since his first full season in major tournaments in 2013, tied with Joey Votto for sixth place in the standings since. Only Mike Trout, Josh Donaldson, Paul Goldschmidt, Mookie Betts and Jose Altuve have a stronger war over this six-year period.
