Many PS Vita developers cancel projects after PS Store suddenly closes

Sony will close the PS Vita showcase on August 27, despite the development of new games for the platform. Short notice – and miscommunication from the platform owner – has resulted in many projects being canceled in the past 48 hours, while other independent developers scramble to complete their current titles on time.

The manufacturer will cease certification of software on its portable platform starting July 12, giving independent teams weeks to complete their games – and a tiny window to sell them. For developers like Lillymo Games – the makers of Habroxia 2 – this has resulted in cancellation of his next title. Other versions like Thief roulette and Lazr were canned.

But some studios are moving forward. We’ve already reported on Scourgebringer, which will have a window of just over 100 days to sell its game, but Spooky Squid Games has confirmed it will be scrambling to release. Russian subway dogs as expected – and Suicidal Robot Games made a similar commitment to Janky hand cannon. The latter documents his progress on Twitter.

In terms of developer relations, this whole scenario is terrible on Sony’s side. Lillymo Games recently purchased a PS Vita development kit, which was provided by the platform owner without further information on their intentions to close the storefront. Giving consumers such short notice is poor, but not communicating with loyal development partners is unforgivable.
